Sometime in the last 24 hours, the Indian student who had been assaulted in a bus by six drunk men had died in a Singapore hospital.
What happened to her broke my heart as it is one of my greatest fears.
It really shook me to the core that even though my blog entries had been about self-improvement, beauty and other cute things, I have decided to write my first more serious blog entry.

I count myself lucky that I am not a victim of violence.
That fact doesn't help me sleep better at night knowing that so many women out there have and are still suffering.
I live in fear that people want to harm me simply because I'm a woman.
✖
I remember a movement made my girls all over the world about a comment made by an authority figure (policeman) about how it was the girl's fault.
That it was the girl who was asking for it by the way she acts and the way she dresses.
The bottom line was that women should dress in a certain way to avoid being assaulted.
The movement reminded everyone to stop insisting on certain "right" ways on how women should act but to make men stop raping women.
Focus should be on how the men acted and not the women.

WORK OF NATURE, WORK OF MEN
This work stands out to me because I love furry bear creatures. And this is a very creative spin.
I stay away from talk about violence against women because it makes me feel bad and powerless.
But that's not good. Women have to face the fact there our sisters struggle with violence everyday.
Unfortunately, women have to be reminded that this happens. Even if you don't think about it, even if it hasn't happened to anyone you know, even if it hasn't happened in front of you... these are average occurrences.

This is a long battle for women everywhere.
For many, rape is too shameful to be shared verbally. This is especially true for conservative cultures like mine.
Common things rapists will say:
1) If you tell your parents, they will disown you.
1) If you tell your parents, they will disown you.
2) If you tell your friends, they will abandon you.
3) If you tell anyone, they will know that you're a dirty slut.
4) You enjoyed it.

Many assaults happen in secret. The women never get the medical attention that they need.
It's difficult to come up with an excuse, let alone bring yourself to the hospital.
They fear that they would be judged. Because if you're a strong and good girl, then this wouldn't happen to you.
This is your fault.
✖
This is a public problem. That means that this is everyone's problem.
Sadly, people find a way to ignore it.
Because these things are too horrible to think about.
If you don't think about it, then it won't happen to you, especially not in your own family unit.

This is what a lot of women do to cope.
They feel like they have no choice as there's no one to help them.

Is there hope?
